Abstract

Background: Time-restricted eating (TRE) confines food intake to a fixed daily window and has become popular for weight
management in overweight adults. Objective: To synthesise randomised trial and meta-analytic evidence on TRE and body
composition. Methods: Narrative review of published randomised trials, systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and mechanistic
studies. Findings: TRE produces modest weight loss (1-4% of baseline) comparable to continuous energy restriction, driven
mainly by fat mass loss, with lean mass generally preserved. Conclusions: TRE is a viable, low-burden weight-management option,
though superiority over calorie counting remains unproven.
