Low volumetric yield in bioreactors run with free, dissolved biocatalyst -- the standard-care configuration in most industrial enzymatic processes -- is driven by enzyme deactivation, product inhibition, and the cost of discarding a soluble catalyst after a single batch. This comparative analysis reviews four widely used immobilization strategies -- adsorption, covalent binding, entrapment/encapsulation, and cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) -- against free-enzyme standard care, focused on reaction yield, operational stability across reuse cycles, and volumetric productivity under diffusion-limited bioreactor conditions. Immobilized preparations consistently retain a larger fraction of initial activity after repeated batches than free enzyme, and packed-bed or fluidized-bed configurations built around immobilized catalyst achieve markedly higher volumetric productivity than standard-care stirred-tank operation limited by single-use enzyme. CLEAs and covalent binding show the strongest combination of activity retention and yield recovery, while adsorption and entrapment trade some activity for simpler, lower-cost preparation; diffusional resistance from the support remains the dominant yield-limiting factor and must be weighed against the reusability gains immobilization provides. Immobilization is therefore not a uniform upgrade over standard care but a family of trade-offs whose optimal choice depends on the specific low-yield bottleneck, with reactor configuration selected jointly with immobilization technique rather than as an independent decision.
